WAIHEKE ISLAND

Where to Wander, Eat and Drink

There is so much choice on Waiheke, but here are some of our fav's:

Within walking Distance of Tiny Home:

  • Te Ara Hura walking trail around the Western headland - about 1-1.5hour walk

  • On your walk, stop off at Ahi Pao on the shores of Matiatia for a delicious breakfast or lunch, coffee or a beer.

  • Or, walk into Oneroa Village via Blackpool Beach, for a coffee, meal, drink and shopping.  From there, pop down the hill for a walk along the golden sands of Oneroa beach.

  • In Oneroa you'll find a selection of fantastic restaurants, bars, and cafes, including local favourite FeniceAkito for plant-focused fare; the famous Oyster Inn, run by Josh Emmett, The Island Grocer for a delectable selection of specialty grocery items and The Merchant for takeaway coffee and food.  We recommend Island Gelato for delicious gelato, coffees, and yummy bagels.  Don't forget to pop into Timmy Smith's beautiful jewellery and tea store, and Veranda for gifts and gorgeous things for your home.

  • Head up and over the hill from the Tiny Home for a late afternoon vino and meal at Mudbrick Vineyard and Restaurant.  The views are unrivaled.  Choose between fine dining or more relaxed bistro meals at the Archive Bar; or for an even more relaxed vibe, head on up to the upper deck, find yourself a bean bag and settle in for a drink and bar snacks to watch the sun go down over Rangitoto.

  • Cable Bay Vineyard is also a 5-minute walk along Church Bay Road for great food and wines, complete with stunning views back towards Auckland.

Further afield:

No visit to Waiheke is complete without a trip to Onetangi beach where you can soak up the sun's rays on beautiful white sands and enjoy safe swimming in the crystal blue sea.  Enjoy some of Waiheke's finest establishments for eating and drinking nearby:

  • 372 Restaurant is a must, for outstanding food, wine and ambiance overlooking the pristine white sands of Onetangi Beach.  Wonderful hosts Helen and Luke will have you feeling like you never want to leave!

  • Charlie Farley's.  Next door to 372 you'll find Charlie's, a Waiheke institution since 1987.  Offering a relaxed, family-friendly environment, and open all day from breakfast to dinner, and later.  Head here after a day on the beach for a drink or a meal.

  • Casita Miro - for divine Spanish and Mediterranean fare in a stunning light-filled Miro-inspired setting.  Another must!

Nearby on the 'Onetangi Straight' you'll find a great selection of vineyards and eateries within walking distance of each other:

  • Tantalus and Alibi - Head to Tantalus for an upscale dining experience, set within beautiful gardens amongst the vines.  Downstairs you'll find Alibi Brewing Co. "serving up Creative Cocktails, Delicious Dishes, Genuine Vibes, and Craft Beer made onsite".

  • Wild on Waiheke The home of Waiheke Island Brewery and Wild Estate Vineyard for a more relaxed, family-friendly setting - there are activities for the kids and lots of space to run.  Also offers archery and electronic clay bird shooting.

  • Stonyridge Vineyard - another Waiheke institution.  Wine Tastings, Lunch, Dancing till late.. A great spot for groups and for chilling on the deck overlooking the vines, often a DJ on summer weekends.

  • The Shed at Te Motu - A charmingly rustic restaurant with an ever-changing seasonal menu shaped on what is fresh in the garden and available locally.. with delicious wines to boot.

  • The HEKE - Coming Soon!  We are looking forward to relaxed afternoons spent at the new HEKE kitchen, the home of Heke Beer and Waiheke Whisky.

Further east from Onetangi you'll find:

If you have time, head to stunning Palm Beach - a gorgeous white sandy bay.  Here you'll find Arcadia for a casual bite and drink or the Palm Beach store for an ice cream.. good coffee too.
